News about Nick Taylor

Nick Taylor defeated Tommy Fleetwood at the RBC Canadian Open by sinking a 72-foot eagle putt on the fourth hole for a playoff to win the national championship for the first time in 69 years.

After making the longest putt in PGA Tour history on Sunday, Taylor tossed his putter into the air and jumped into his caddy’s arms. Canadian golfers Mike Weir, Corey Conners and Adam Hadwin were among those who ran onto the green to congratulate him.

I can’t even talk. This is for all the men out there. With tears in her eyes, Taylor commented: “This is for my family back home. Pat Fletcher won the Canadian Open the last time a player from Canada did so in 1954 at Point Gray in Vancouver. Fletcher was born in England; Carl Keffer, who won in 1909 and 1914, was the only champion who was also a Canadian.

Taylor finished 17-under-par 271 on the 18th hole at Oakdale, walking backwards with his hand raised as the ball landed in the cup. The crowd cheered at his every step and even serenaded him with “O Canada” on a box of T-shirts. He had a 66 under par Sunday.

To win in regulation, Fleetwood needed to birdie the par-5 sixth, but missed his first putt to the right, setting it on a hard ball in the right rough and two-putting for par to force a rain-soaked playoff.

In their first playoff meeting at No. 18, the golfers traded birdies. Before going back to 18, they both made the par 18 and the par 3 of eight. After his tee shot hit the fairway bunker, Fleetwood made a layup as Taylor hit the green in two shots. Taylor’s uphill eagle putt from the front of the green struck the club and fell off, giving Fleetwood a chance to birdie, but he should not have putt.

When asked what Canada’s victory at UFC 289 means for Canadian mixed martial arts, a visibly ecstatic Jasudavicius replied: “Dude, we have a hot spot. Don’t ignore the Canadians. We’re a bunch of tough cookies and we’re here to throw them away. People, in my opinion, underestimate Canada. Oh how nice Canadians are. I guess we are polite before entering.
