Nicole Kidman Calls Her Late Mother 'My Compass' and a 'Major Guide' in Her Life

Nicole Kidman has reflected on her close relationship with her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, who died in September at the age of 84.

Kidman described her mother as a mentor in her life.

“My mother has obviously been the main guide through my life and probably my compass in terms of everything I’ve done,” he said Special operations: Lioness said the star Extra during a recent interview.

In the interview for 2020 Sydney Morning HeraldKidman spoke about the influence her mother had on her life growing up and as an aspiring actress.

“She gave me the fire to pursue the career I have because I always wanted to please her,” Kidman said. “But she was also carving her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to blaze their own trails.”

Kidman said her mother paved the way for her and her sister in opportunities she didn’t have.

“Mom didn’t necessarily get the career she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have equal opportunities,” Kidman said. “It gave me life. And she gave me life, she and my dad.”

Janelle also had a big influence on Kidman’s style.

In November 2023, Kidman told PEOPLE that her mother is “so into what I wear” at industry events. Her mother and grandmother “loved nice clothes,” Kidman recalled. “I watched them sew, embroider, knit, crochet. And I think when you grow up watching people in your household do it, then you love it.”

Kidman learned of her mother’s death on September 7 while she was at the Venice Film Festival. She immediately left the festival to be with her family.

Kidman won Best Actress for her role in Venice for Girl. During what was supposed to be her acceptance speech, director Halina Reijn read Kidman’s statement to the audience: “I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her.”

In her statement, Kidman said she was heartbroken and was paying tribute to her late mother.

“She shaped me, she guided me and she created me. I am extremely grateful to be able to say her name through Halina to all of you,” said Kidman.

Kidman’s family received an outpouring of condolences from fans and supporters following the news. Kidman and her sister, Antonia Kidman, thanked fans in a joint Instagram post on Sept. 12, which featured a slideshow of photos of their beloved mother and family.

“My sister and I, along with our family, want to thank you for the outpouring of love and kindness we’ve felt this week,” Kidman and Antonia wrote.

Kidman and Antonia thanked the public for respecting the family’s privacy while they receive treatment at this difficult time.

Kidman’s husband Keith Urban also thanked fans for their condolences during an appearance on the Today show on Wednesday, October 30.
