Nicole Kidman Chugs a Glass of Milk Onstage While Accepting Award for Babygirl

Nicole Kidman pays tribute to her Girl character.

While accepting the award for best actress at the National Board of Review gala in New York on Tuesday, January 7, the 57-year-old actress included a steamy scene from the erotic thriller A24 in her acceptance speech.

“I’ll raise a glass of milk for all the girls in the room,” she said, raising the drink high above her head on the dais.

Cheers echoed through the room as Kidman sipped from the glass, downing the entire contents of the cup in mere seconds.

“Good girl,” she said with a smile before blowing a kiss as she left the stage.

Kidman’s milk moment was about a scene in the Girl when her character Romy, an executive and “perfect” wife and mother, accepts a tall glass of milk from Samuel (played by Harris Dickinson), an intern with whom she begins a torrid affair, while sitting at a bar with friends and co-workers.

At first taken aback by the arrival of the glass, Romy then drinks every last drop of milk while making direct eye contact with a much younger man, who has gathered with his friends on the other side of the room.

The pair exchange intense glances as she finishes her drink and wipes her mouth.

Later, when both groups have left the hall, Samuel walks by and whispers in her ear, “Good girl.”

According to Girlby director, writer and co-producer Halina Reijn, the scene is inspired by a real event from her life.

“That happened to me,” Reijn, 49, recently told IndieWire.

Reijn, who is also an actress, recalled a time when she had just finished a production and wanted to celebrate, but all her friends were “boring”, so she went out alone.

“I went to a bar and ordered something boring like a Diet Coke because I didn’t drink at the time because I was a control freak. There was a young Belgian actor—I can’t say who he was—but he was famous. I knew about him. I never spoke to him. He was at least 15 years younger than me and he ordered me a glass of milk,” she said in an interview on December 28.

“I thought it was amazing, hot stuff and so brave, so I wanted to reward him by drinking the whole thing, which I did. I was a little sick, to be honest with you, because it was cow’s milk. It used to be,” Reijn added, calling it “one of the most exciting moments of my life.”

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE on the red carpet at the 2024 Gotham Awards on Dec. 2, Kidman said Girl viewers might want to watch the movie “on their own”.
