Nigella Lawson Is ‘Self-Conscious’ to Say ‘Microwave’ After Her Infamous Mispronunciation

Nigella Lawson sets the record straight on her legendary mispronunciation.

Three years ago, the celebrity chef mispronounced “microwave” as “mee-krow-wah-vay” on an episode of her British cooking show Eat, cook, repeat. The British chef (63) was explaining the steps to make brown butter colcannon when an interesting excuse slipped out of her mouth.

“I still need some milk, whole, that I warmed up in the mee-krow-wah-vay,” she said in the video, which quickly caused a storm on social media.

“I wasn’t really aware I said that because that’s what I call it at home,” Lawson told the BBC’s Jon Kay on an episode of BBC Breakfast, which aired on Christmas Day.

At the time, people debated whether Lawson was really he pronounces “microwave” that way, so the chef clarified that he does, but “not because I think that’s how it’s actually pronounced.”

Now, Lawson said the whole ordeal has changed the way she says the word — again. “It made me pretty self-conscious,” Kay said. “I tend to call it ‘you know what’ now.”

Despite some critics, she said many fans have reached out to her saying they related to her stupid accident.

“And what’s very interesting is that a lot of people have contacted me to tell me what their family’s wrong excuses are because there are so many families,” she explained. “They mispronounce the word either because the child in the family never knows how to pronounce it correctly and it has become part of their family language or just because they are joking around.”

In 2021, Lawson told PEOPLE that she understands why some viewers think she’s serious about the pronunciation. “I guess I did it with a clean face,” she said.
