In 1970, Nile began his career as a touring musician for the Sesame Street stage when he met bassist Bernard Edwards. After that, the Big Apple Band was formed to serve as backup musicians. The band was named Chic in 1977.
R&B standards include “I Want Your Love,” “Le Freak,” “Everybody Dance,” “My Forbidden Lover,” “Dance, Dance, Dance” and “Good Times.” In addition, the band was instrumental in raising the disc to new heights of popularity. Believer, their last Atlantic album, was released in 1982.
He also produced Madonna’s chart-topping album Like a Virgin in 1984. After Stevie Ray Vaughan’s death in 1990, he produced the Vaughan Brothers Family Style CD. Edwards and Nile reformed Chic in 1992 and composed new material for the album Chic-Ism. Chic Freak and More Treat, a Japan-only album released in 1996, featured legendary Chic songs covered with guest vocals.
His critically acclaimed autobiography, Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny, was published by Spiegel & Grau in 2011. He also stated in 2012 that he would be collaborating with Daft Punk on their upcoming album, Random Access Memories, which was published in 2013.
He and Daft Punk performed “Get Lucky” during the Grammys in 2014. Following that, in 2015 he released “I’ll Be There,” Chic’s first song in over 23 years. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. The first single from Chic’s debut album, “Till the World Falls,” was released in June 2018. Singles from the album included “Do You Wanna Party” featuring LunchMoney Lewis, and “Sober, ” with Craig David and Stefflon Don.
