Nina Dobrev Details How Her Beauty Routine Has Changed — and a Mistake She Used to Make Before Bed (Exclusive)

Nina Dobrev has become wiser over the years.

In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE at the Shiseido Blue Project’s fourth annual beach cleanup event, the 35-year-old actress opens up about how her beauty routine has evolved over the years and the one mistake she makes every night before bed.

“I wash my face a lot more,” says Dobrev. “I slept with makeup on when I was in my early 20s.”

“In my 30s I’ve obviously become a lot stricter about washing my face and taking off my makeup every night, using amazing products, like Shiseido, and just keeping my skin hydrated,” she adds. “That one is probably the biggest.”

Using SPF to protect her skin from the sun is another thing that Dobrev has made sure to stay on top of as the years go by.

“When I was younger, I definitely wasn’t that aware [of using SPF] because I have olive skin and I don’t burn so easily,” he explains.

Stating that her friends are “very fair-skinned” and “would burn quickly” while sitting in the sun, The Vampire Diaries alum says she noticed they started using SPF as “part of their routine at a much younger age,” prompting her to take steps to protect her skin.

“As I grew older, I [use SPF] for vanity, for cancer, for all kinds of reasons,” says Dobrev. “I always wear SPF. It’s the first thing I do after moisturiser, then I put on my make-up and sometimes I even use spray tan afterwards, during the day.”

Last year, Dobrev opened up to PEOPLE about how, like her beauty routine, her style has also changed over the years.

“I hope my style has definitely evolved,” she said. “Fashion and function, that’s always been my thing, but I think it’s been elevated a little bit over the years.”

Dobrev also said she has a style routine that’s important to her — putting comfort above all else.

“I think it’s really important to be comfortable and look cool at the same time,” she explained. “Just more functional and comfortable.”
