Nirmal Kumar Dhara became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after completing his formal education. In 2016, he contested the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections on a ticket from the BJP’s Indas constituency (reserved for SC candidates), but failed. In the election, he was defeated by All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) candidate Gurupada Mete. He contested the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections from the Indas constituency of the BJP and won. In the election, he defeated his nearest rival Gurupada Mete by a margin of 7,220 votes.
