During the assembly on August 31, around 30 students of Nirmala High School in NTR Circle allegedly fell ill after being forced to stand in the sun. The students fell ill as they were forced to stand in the sun for a long time, according to District Education Officer (DEO), CV Renuka. The tragedy occurred as a result of a lack of knowledge about the possible health hazards associated with prolonged exposure to the sun. The school administration admitted its mistake and promised to take appropriate steps to prevent similar cases in the future. Additionally, to ensure student safety, indoor gatherings will be organized or adequate shade will be provided.
Assemblies are now held indoors or in shaded areas thanks to a policy the school administration has put in place to protect children’s safety. Several students in the line of people waiting on the school property fainted and complained of headaches and dizziness. Employees of Nirmala High School alleged that during the assembly, a teacher’s retirement ceremony, the children were asked to wait. Several students suddenly collapsed complaining of their precarious position.
As soon as the incident happened, the school administration sprang into action and alerted the emergency services and provided first aid to the injured children. They launched an investigation to find out what happened and prevent such incidents from happening again. After learning about the situation, CV Renuka, district education officer, and Suhasini, district medical and health officer, rushed to the school with an ambulance to help the sick students. About 15 students were given ORS and buttermilk after complaining of headache, fever and dizziness. The students and their parents were allowed home after they recovered, according to the DEO. Students fell ill because they spent more time in the sun, says Ms. Renuka.
