At the age of ten, Nishad Kumar chose to play sports. Initially, he started training under coach Ramesh at Saraswati Vidya Mandir in Katohar Khurd, Himachal Pradesh. In addition to the high jump, he also competed in the 200m and 400m. In 2009, he began competing in para-athletics in the high jump category.

In 2017, he again won the silver medal in the 1.83m high jump at the National Disabled Track and Field Championships. Nishad won the gold medal in the T46 category at the 2021 World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai. After winning this championship, he qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. On October 23, 2023, Nishad won the men’s high jump T47 gold medal at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China. During the competition, he set a high jump record of 2.02m.
