Olubankole Wellington, better known by his stage name Banky W, is a multi-talented Nigerian singer, rapper, actor, entrepreneur and politician. He was born on March 27, 1981 in the United States to Nigerian parents, but his family moved back to Nigeria when he was five years old. Banky W developed a passion for singing at a young age and actively participated in his church choir.
For his education, Banky W attended primary and secondary school in Lagos, Nigeria. He later received a scholarship to study at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, USA. During his studies, in 2002 he founded the publishing house Empire Mates Entertainment (EME).
During that time he also worked at GlobalSpec. In 2009, Banky W moved from the US to Nigeria and established his record label in Lagos. He has signed artists such as Niyola, Shaydee, Skales and Wizkid to the label. In 2005, he released his debut studio album titled “Back in the Building”, featuring his debut single “Ebute Metta”.
