Have you ever tried to use voice-to-text on your Android and seen the error “You do not have permission to enable voice typing”? This error can appear on Gboard, SwiftKey or even the default keyboard on your Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Pixel or other Android phone. The error usually appears when you tap the microphone on your keyboard to compose voice text, and often means that the keyboard doesn’t have permission to access your microphone. Fortunately, that’s easy to fix! Read on to learn more about how to get rid of that error message.
Enable voice typing in keyboard settings. Next, allow a keyboard app (such as Gboard or Swiftkey) to access your microphone settings > applications > (app name) > Permissions > Microphone.
Open the keyboard. One of the reasons why you’re seeing a “You don’t have permission to turn on voice input” error could be because voice input isn’t enabled yet. To start troubleshooting, open any app that pulls up your keyboard, such as a text message, Messenger conversation, or email.
- If you’ve already enabled voice typing, go to Allow microphone permissions.
Press and hold the comma , then select . The comma is located in the lower left corner of your phone’s keyboard. If you hold down the comma, the keyboard menu will open. Tap the gear icon to open the settings.
Touch voice writing. It is located next to the microphone icon.
Tap the switch next to “Use voice input” to turn it on. It will point to the right when the feature is enabled.
Open the settings. If voice typing is enabled but you still get “No permission to turn on voice input”, tap the gear app icon or swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick Settings panel, then tap the gear.
- Follow these steps if you’re using a third-party keyboard like Gboard or SwiftKey.[1]
- The text in the Settings menu may differ depending on your phone manufacturer, but the steps are similar enough that any Android can follow them.
Touch applications. You’ll see this next to the grid icon.
Tap the name of your keyboard. You can browse the alphabetical list or use the search bar at the top to quickly find your app.
Touch Permissions. This opens the “Application Permissions” page.
Touch Microphone. It is located next to the microphone icon.
Touch Allow only while using the app. It’s the first option on the menu. You should now be able to use voice typing on your Android keyboard without getting the “No Permission” error.
Open your Android’s settings. If you still see “No permission to turn on voice typing”, the cache may be corrupted.
Touch applications. You may see different words on other Android devices.
Touch Gboard. If you’re using another keyboard app, tap it instead.
Touch Storage. You can see how much space the app is using on your phone.
Touch Clear the cache. To make sure the cache is cleared, restart Android by pressing and holding the power key and pressing Restarting when the Power menu appears.
- Try using the microphone icon again to see if you can speak the text without getting the “No permission” error.
Open the Google Play Store. Most apps update automatically, but you may need to manually update the keyboard app if the “You don’t have permission to enable voice typing” message still appears.
Search for your keyboard app. Tap the search icon at the bottom of the screen to start a search, then enter the name of your keyboard app, such as Gboard or SwiftKey.
Touch Update (if available). If you don’t see the option, your app is up to date.
- After confirming that the app is updated, try voice typing again.
