November Ultra News

One of November Ultra’s wishes came true on February 10, 2023. When her name was announced as the Best New Female Award at Les Victoires De La Musique, all she had worked on in the years before reached its pinnacle. The singer and songwriter, who also goes by Nova, claimed that winning the French Grammy came at the perfect time.

In her bedroom, Nova, who was raised in France by a Portuguese father and a Spanish mother, was penning songs about her past relationships and life experiences. She eventually completed the 11 songs for her self-produced debut, bedroom walls.

Her musical pieces openly embrace both the beauty and the ugly of life. Each captures some of the most moving and momentous stages, from fleeting time on opening “over & over & over”—The tale’s getting older / Blood’s growing colder / The ticking sound of youth — to more cradling stories of heartbreak on “soft & tender” and the rhythm-dusted “miel” with croons of Been lost for days inside my mind / Can’t find a way to work it out/ ‘Cause I don’t really want us to / But I don’t really want us to break.

The lower lushness and higher registers of Nova’s vocal ranges are appropriate for each story, which is influenced by folk, R&B, 1960s musicals, and the Spanish tales of traditional coplas that her grandpa first taught to her. Her stage name, November Ultra, was also inspired by her love of Frank Ocean and his 2011 mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra.

On bedroom walls: le salon, a deluxe edition of Nova’s album, seven additional songs are included, including the piano-threaded “come into my arms,” which first gained popularity after Camila Cabello used it in a TikTok video. The album also includes the acoustic-opening “le salon: introduction” and other songs. One Spanish-language ballad, “corazón caramelo,” and further songs of continuity through the heartbreaking finality are also included on the album.

Since breaking up with her previous surf-pop band Agua Roja in 2018, Nova has also worked as a side project as a songwriter for other artists including Jaden Smith, Claire Laffut, Kungs, and Jasmiin. Nova has already begun to document one of her most personal narratives, even after moving past the bedroom.

American Songwriter recently interviewed Nova about her ongoing musical journey, why she chooses to compose and sing in English (and Spanish) rather than French, and how she’s moved on from penning songs in her living room.
