Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Stunning New Poster Hints At Vader’s Tatooine Return

Warning: Second half contains Obi-Wan Kenobi episodes 1 & 2 SPOILERS

A stunning new Obi-Wan Kenobi show poster hints at Darth Vader’s return to Tatooine. The new Star Wars TV series centering on the titular Jedi Master premiered its first two episodes on Disney+ today, May 27. The remaining four episodes will air on successive Fridays until the Obi-Wan Kenobi series finale drops on June 22.

Set ten years after the disastrous events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, the new show from director Deborah Chow brings about the long-awaited return of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan, whose performance was one of the most acclaimed elements of the prequel trilogy. Additionally, and surprisingly to many, the show also brings back Hayden Christensen, who will this time play a full-fledged Darth Vader after having tracked Anakin’s transition to the Dark Side in his film appearances. Fans have been eagerly anticipating the show’s promised Obi-Wan Darth Vader rematch, though there’s currently no indication of just when that will be.

Now, a new Obi-Wan Kenobi poster released just prior to the Star Wars show’s premiere hints another potentially significant moment could be on the way. The stunning design includes a silhouette of Vader against the famous double suns of Tatooine, Anakin’s home world and the hiding place of both Obi-Wan and a young Luke Skywalker. While the artist could have just used the imagery for its striking look, it’s possible that the poster is hinting at the Sith Lord returning to Tatooine in his search for his old Master. Fans did indeed catch their first glimpse of Christensen’s Darth Vader in the Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 2 ending, when the titular Jedi learns that his former Padawan survived their fight on Mustafar. As much as a return to Tatooine is entirely possible, the current action seems destined to stay off the franchise’s legendary desert planet for some time. Obi-Wan must still return a young Princess Leia to safety and defeat the Inquisitors pursuing him before he can return, since doing so could risk exposing Luke’s hiding place.

Indeed, as exciting as it would be to see Anakin back on his home planet after so long, viewers might hope that doesn’t happen for a few different reasons. On the one hand, bringing Vader so close to Luke when the former’s Force sensitivity is so strong might be construed by some as a plot hole, since it would be difficult to believe he wouldn’t detect his son there. And on the other, the Star Wars franchise has been criticized for so often returning to Tatooine, and it would be thrilling to see the rest of Obi-Wan Kenobi take place in new locations across the galaxy.
