An off-duty crew member on a flight from Canada to the Dominican Republic last month took over the rest of his trip when the captain became incapacitated with an “uncontrollable nosebleed.”
On Nov. 22, one of the two pilots on Air Transat flight TS186 from Toronto’s Pearson Airport was “unable to continue his duties” due to a nosebleed, prompting an off-duty pilot to take over and fly the plane, it said in a statement the airline.
The plane landed at its destination, Punta Cana International Airport “without incident,” the statement said.

“Since one of our other captains was on the plane with his family going on vacation, he was ready and able to take over the duties of the incapacitated captain for the rest of the flight,” the statement said. “It’s worth noting that our pilots are expertly trained to handle situations like this and can fly our aircraft unaided.”
“As such, there was absolutely no risk to anyone on this flight and the situation would have been the same if the co-pilot had not been on the plane.”

According to a report from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, the incident occurred around 16:50 UTC and was listed as a “Class 5 incident,” meaning it was not the subject of a “comprehensive investigation.”
Instead, his data will be reported for “possible future security analysis, statistical reporting or archival purposes.”
According to the report, the crew member became incapacitated “approximately 3 hours into the flight” as another pilot – who was listed as “company qualified” and was flying as a passenger – replaced him.
The aircraft “proceeded to its intended destination without further incident,” the report said.
None of the 299 people on board were injured, according to a report by the Canadian Transportation Safety Board.
