Official Avengers: Infinity War Poster Unites the MCU Against Thanos

Marvel Studios’ full-length trailer for Avengers: Infinity War is finally here and the official poster has been released with it. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has come a long way since Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark built a ramshackle Iron Man suit in a cave, ten years ago. Since then, Marvel comic book characters such as Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Black Panther, and many more have joined the franchise on the big screen. A number of directors have also made their name working on the MCU over the past decade, with Jon Favreau, James Gunn, Taika Waititi, Ryan Coogler, and of course Anthony and Joe Russo being among the most noteworthy examples.

The Russo Brothers made quite the splash with their first MCU film – 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a movie that many still consider one of the best in the franchise (if not the best). From there, the pair went on to direct Captain America: Civil War, an even more ambitious project that reunited the filmmakers with steadfast MCU screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (who also wrote Captain America: The First Avenger and created the Agent Carter TV show). All four storytellers have come together yet again for Infinity War, a film that exceeds their previous MCU adventures together purely in terms of epic scope and scale.

The official Infinity War poster, which you can see below, further reflects the sheer massive size of the film in terms of its cast alone. Not every major MCU superhero is included here (sorry, Hawkeye and Ant-Man fans), but that goes to show just how packed the Infinity War ensemble truly is. At the center of it all, of course, is the Made Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin), wielding an Infinity Gauntlet that is armed with at least a couple of the Infinity Stones that he’s spent the last decade chasing.

All of the aforementioned characters (again, bar Clint Barton) are featured in the Infinity War poster, along with the original Guardians of the Galaxy, a now teenaged Groot, recent Guardians addition Mantis (Pom Klememtieff), and the cosmic superheroes’ frenemy Nebula (Karen Gillan). Also included here are Hulk, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Vision, War Machine, Falcon, and the White Wolf formerly known as Winter Soldier. Supporting MCU characters Shuri (Letitia Wright), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and Wong (Benedict Wong) have appeared in previously-released Infinity War screenshots and managed to make the cut here too.

Stylistically, this poster is an amalgamation of colors and imagery used in one-sheets for a number of previous MCU movies, including the Guardians of the Galaxy films and last year’s Thor: Ragnarok. That’s a testament to one of the many challenges facing the movie – namely, combining the different tones and aesthetics of the MCU films to date in a seamless fashion. It’s also a reflection of how much of the film will take place away from earth on the cosmic side of the MCU, where Thanos and the Guardians come from.

Of course, a significant chunk of the action in Infinity War also takes place on earth, as the trailers and TV spots for the film have demonstrated. It was recently confirmed that the third act of the movie takes place largely in Wakanda specifically, as the heroes of the MCU regroup there in order to make a final stand against the increasingly powerful Thanos and his army of minions. That will allow Infinity War to further connect to the events of February’s Black Panther solo movie, while also setting the stage for a climactic showdown that may result in the deaths of more than a few fan-favorite heroes. Suffice it to say, MCU fans won’t want to miss this one.
