His great grandparents, Edward and Kathe Murs, were of Latvian ancestry. He was a striker for the school’s football team while attending Howbridge Junior School in Witham and Notley High School in Braintree, Essex.
Olly played semi-professionally for Isthmian Division One North side Witham Town between 2006 and 2008. During the 2006–2007 season, he excelled for the club’s reserve squad, scoring 12 goals in 13 games and taking home the Ridgeons Reserve Teams Cup. The following season, he made three first team appearances and scored once, but an injury caused him to retire from sport.
Before joining The X Factor, Murs sang with his friend Jon Goodey in a covers band called the Small Town Blaggers and worked as a recruiting consultant at Prime Appointments in Witham. In 2007, he also made an appearance on the game programme Deal or No Deal, when he earned a pitiful £10. Olly was the only participant to appear on the programme twice when he returned for a celebrity edition of the show in 2012.
He visited Australia in 2008 and spent three months travelling by himself around the Gold Coast. It was following his return that he decided, having tried it out unsuccessfully twice in the past (when he failed to make it past the stage where he had to audition in front of the producers), to re-audition for The X Factor again.

Murs performed “Your Song” by Elton John during boot camp. He sang “She’s the One” on the first live show and “A Fool in Love” on the second, which Cowell praised as being “in a different league.” He chose “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” for week three. Cowell claimed he was “coming into his own each week,” and Walsh stated he was the “dark horse of the competition.” He frequently used dance moves, such as his signature “Olly wiggle,” in his performances.
