Basically, the Olympics are an arena of excellence that showcases the world’s best athletes.
But over the years, it’s also been the perfect stage for some incredibly crass blunders.

Last week, pole vaulter Anthony Ammirati had his Olympic medal dreams dashed by his own bump.
The 21-year-old was attempting to clear 5.70m after easily clearing two other heights. Everything seemed to be going his way before the unthinkable happened.
His manhood got in the way and caught a pole, meaning he failed to qualify for the final.
The moment instantly went viral and has since racked up millions of views on TikTok, Instagram and Xu.
He’s not even the only pole vaulter to have an unexpectedly rude moment, with Canadian Alysha Newman – who also models for OnlyFans – sending fans into a frenzy by twerking to celebrate.
After clearing a height of 4.85m in her second attempt at the Paris Olympics, she headed towards the stands before stopping to dance cheekily for the crowd.
A BBC commentator could be heard saying: “I’m not sure about that celebration”.
Here, we look at the dumbest mistakes the Olympians have faced.
Battle of the Bulge
As disappointed as Anthony is, there is one person who knows exactly what he went through.
In 2016, Hiroki Ojita, who represented Japan in the pole vault, was attempting to clear 5.3m in Group A of the first round.

First his foot hit the bar, then his lower leg came into contact with it, causing it to swing.
But the final blow came when his bulge hit the bar and knocked it out of its grip.
In the second attempt, he managed to jump the height.
But he only managed to clear 5.45m, which dropped him to 21st place and ended his medal dreams.
Order no!

American rower Henrik Rummel was overjoyed when he and his team won the bronze medal in the coxless four at the 2012 London Olympics.
But fans really went wild after the ceremony, when one shared pictures of Henrik on Reddit and posted: “One American rower was especially excited about his bronze medal.”
Other users couldn’t believe their eyes, and the post received more than 1,000 comments.
A video of him receiving his medal was posted on YouTube and went viral. Henrik soon heard the chatter on social media and decided to address it.
Responding to a post on Reddit under the username Rummelator, he protested: “I don’t know why he ended up in that position, but there you go.”
Needless to say, this didn’t help matters and led to even more comments, with one implying that at least he had somewhere to “hang his medal”.
Beren everything

At the 2009 World Championships, Olympian Ricky Beren lived up to his name when he showed it all to the crowd at the World Aquatics Championships in Rome.
The US representative’s swimsuit ripped badly at the back as he stretched before diving into the pool for the men’s 4×100 relay.
Undeterred by the accident, Ricky, who won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, carried on and helped his team win the gold medal.
Luckily for him, his accident happened at a time when social media wasn’t as prevalent, meaning his embarrassing moment won’t be remembered too much.
Speaking about the incident later, he said: “I was a bit terrified just for a second.
“I felt like [the split] it was almost up to my knees. I felt like I was putting on a pretty good show.”

The Canadian team had to find new bikini bottoms or face disqualificationCredit: Getty
When it comes to women’s volleyball at the Olympics, few can come close to Canada’s Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes.
The two stars won medals at several competitions, but that didn’t stop them from experiencing, as they described, the most embarrassing moment of their careers.
At the 2017 World Tour event in the Netherlands, they wore tights throughout the tournament.
But just before another game was due to start, they were told they wouldn’t be allowed to play without matching colored bikini bottoms.
Explaining the incident in a YouTube video, they said they faced a serious risk of being disqualified given their hotel was 45 minutes away and they had no other options.
They were later advised to borrow the bikini bottoms previously used by the tournament dancers. But they quickly realized that they were more like thongs and inappropriate.
They then had to ask the Swiss team – who had just played and won their match – for their sweaty bikini bottoms. Although confused at first, the Swiss team allowed them.
Unfortunately, they suffered a heavy defeat against their Brazilian opponents.
Melissa said: “It’s probably one of my most embarrassing moments, just like a rookie move. And now we pull down our pants before every game to make sure we’re wearing the same underpants.”
Olympic Games in Paris with 300 thousand condoms
The Olympic Games are coming to the “City of Love”.
Almost 15,000 residents – of which around 10,500 are athletes – will crowd into the Olympic village between July 26 and August 11.
To make the athletes feel at home, the organizers have taken a number of measures.
One of them is the storage of about 300,000 condoms, in theory enough for about two each day during the Games.
A number of Olympic athletes have opened up about their steamy behind-the-scenes lives while in camp, including massive sex orgies and parties.
London 2012 held the title of “cheekiest games ever”, but the 150,000 condom orders paled in comparison to the 450,000 ordered for the Rio Games four years later.
Organizers have included condoms at every match since Seoul in 1988, when they were used to spread awareness about HIV and AIDS.
Even with the ban on intimacy in Tokyo 2020 due to Covid-19, around 150,000 johnnies were distributed.

In 2014, Henrik Harlaut embarrassed himself when his pants fell to his knees during a ski race at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
The Swedish freestyle skier donned a pair of big white pants for his qualifying round.
As he descended the slopes, the cheering crowd was in awe of his landing skills.
But their applause soon turned to sighs as his pants fell to his knees, revealing a pair of blue underwear at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park.
Luckily his pants didn’t trip him and he was able to finish the event.

Flavia Zoccari, one of the best swimmers in Italy, was left in tears when she had to withdraw from the competition due to tears in her swimsuit.
She wore the £318 Jaked J01 swimsuit, said to be top-of-the-line, at the 2009 Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy.
But she burst into tears after being told she could no longer finish after her swimsuit tore to reveal her bottom.
The costume was the target of criticism before the incident. Many critics said it gave swimmers an unfair advantage.
It was banned by the International Swimming Federation before being allowed again just a month later. Flavia later apologized.

Gillian Cooke bared her bum as she bent over on a bob
In 2011, Gillian Cooke gave the world a real look when she flashed her bum at the World Cup.
While preparing for the bobsleigh competition, her skin-tight Lycra costume ripped open, revealing her bum and black panties.
Completely oblivious to what had just happened, she was laser-focused on the race and kept going.
But for the spectators and spectators, the concentration on the race has long since disappeared. Even the clerk behind her burst out laughing when he saw the mistake.
The Scottish athlete still managed to reach seventh place. In an interview with The Sun, she joked: “I’m so grateful I was wearing underwear that day.”
She added: “I only hesitated for a second. But if we had pulled back we would have been disqualified. There was nothing I could do but go.”
