Olympics 2024 medal table revealed as Team GB record lowest tally in 20 years but still celebrate incredible triumphs

The medal table for the 2024 Olympics has been revealed with just two events remaining from the Paris Games.

Team Great Britain recorded a valiant effort of 65 medals, including 14 gold, during the summer showdown with a nation that has failed to claim multiple podium places in the last two events.

Neah Evans completed Team GB’s efforts in the velodrome this afternoon for the Women’s Omnium, but unfortunately she was unable to fight her way into medal contention.

This means the British finish seventh in the standings, marking their lowest gold return in 20 YEARS.

GB won 20 golds in Tokyo, 27 in Rio, 29 in London 2012 and 19 at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

The 2004 Athens Olympics was the last time the Great Britain team won less than in Paris, with a total of nine gold medals.

However, this year’s total of 65 is the same number they achieved in London 2012 and one more than the 64 they earned in Tokyo.

British athletes continued to do the country proud, winning memorable medals over the course of two weeks.

Team USA left as the top team in Paris with a whopping 40 gold medals to their name and a total of 126 podium finishes.

Their victory over France in women’s basketball secured their 40th gold, putting them at the top of the standings.

The USA had the same number of gold medals as China, but just finished ahead of the Chinese thanks to a superior medal total – 126 to China’s 91.

Japan finished third behind China with 20 gold medals and a total score of 45.

The worst Olympic mistakes

Britain’s 14 gold medals have been won in 11 different sports, with rowing being our most successful event.

First places in the lightweight women’s doubles, women’s fours and men’s eights added three gold medals to the total.

Equestrian was the second most successful national sport after Team GB won gold in the team and show jumping events.

There have also been some incredible moments in athletics for British athletes.

Some nine events produced a silver or bronze medal in the national bag, with Golden Girl Keely Hodgkinson taking the top prize in the women’s 800m.

Alex Yee’s incredible comeback in the men’s individual triathlon also won gold, while Bryony Page won the hearts of the nation with her heroics to win the women’s trampoline.

The bikes also proved fruitful for Team GB with the women’s team sprint winning track gold and Thomas Pidcock’s sensational late turnaround in the men’s cross-country mountain bike helping to secure a second cycling gold.

The men’s 4x200m freestyle relay was the only gold for Britain in the pool, while the last two first places went to Tony Roberts in climbing and Nathan Hales in men’s trap shooting.

Team GB legends from previous games contributed to the total with icons such as Tom Daley, Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Adam Peaty all winning silver.
