'Oppenheimer' Becomes Third Biggest Movie of 2023 at Global Box Office

Oppenheimer reached another milestone at the box office.

As of Thursday, Box Office Mojo ranks Christopher Nolan’s latest film — a biopic about American theoretical physicist and Manhattan Project scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer — as the year’s third-highest grosser at the global box office.

The WWII-focused drama has now grossed $854 million worldwide, surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3total, amounting to $845.5 million worldwide. The only two films that made more money globally this year are Barbie and Super Mario Bros. Movieand each grossed more than a billion dollars worldwide.

In North America, Oppenheimer remains this year’s fifth highest-grossing film. Barbie and Super Mario Bros. are also at the top of the domestic box office, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and the end of Marvel Studios Guardians trilogy in third and fourth place.

Oppenheimer it earned $311.2 million at the domestic box office and $542.8 million at the international box office. Not adjusted for inflation, the film is the 53-year-old Nolan’s biggest box office hit worldwide since 2012. The Dark Knight Riseswhich crossed the billion dollar mark globally.

Oppenheimer and Barbie notably, both opened in theaters on July 21, creating a fan-fueled “Barbenheimer” box office phenomenon that resulted in the best single weekend in theaters so far this year, according to Box Office Mojo. Oppenheimer opened to $82.4 million and helped propel the nation’s largest movie theater chain, AMC Theaters, to its highest-grossing single-week ticket revenue in the company’s history.

After the outstanding opening weekend of those films, outlets like Diversity reported that July 21-23 was the largest aggregate opening weekend at the domestic box office since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
