Robert Downey Jr may now be a big Hollywood star – he recently starred in one of Hollywood’s biggest movies of 2023, Oppenheimer, but the actor hasn’t always been so successful!
The Avengers actor has revealed that he auditioned for the role of Jack Black in The Holiday, the hit movie that also stars Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz – only to be grilled by Kate at the audition.

Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Howard Stern Show, the pair discussed how they auditioned together, with Robert explaining, “They both invited us just to fill positions… [Nancy Meyers] I need someone to read with the girls, and we’re sitting there and saying, ‘That’s going to happen to us'”
“And I said, ‘I must have a better British accent than Jude Law at this point.’ And Winslet said, ‘That’s the worst British accent I’ve ever heard’.”

He joked, “I’ll check out now, but I’m getting some marshmallows from the minibar.”

Jimmy also talked about his experiences after reading for the role of Miles in the romantic comedy, adding, “Honestly, I think, I said, ‘If Jack Black said no to this movie, I would do anything for it,'” Fallon recalled. “‘I’ll do it for half his price'”
Kate jokes about auditions
Jimmy also revealed that he never auditioned again after reading it, joking, “I was sitting across from Robert Downey Jr. and I thought, ‘This is the best actor I’ve ever sat across and real. show a scene from my movie. whole career.’ It was amazing and I almost gave up. I never came back. That was the last time I auditioned.”
Robert, who is perhaps best known for playing Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, surprised fans by calling Oppenheimer “the best movie” he’s ever been in. Speaking at the UK premiere of his upcoming biopic thriller, he explained: “This is the best movie I’ve ever been in and I can’t wait for you all to experience it.

“Regardless of your expectations and what you think, it exceeds them. This was a summer blockbuster when I was growing up. It changed your life in some way. But again, that’s why Christopher Nolan is.”
At the premiere for HELLO! also published by Kenneth Branagh. about incredible talent in a film that also stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Matt Damon.
He said: “It has been privileged to work with an incredible cast with a brilliant director on a subject that is both historically important but also delivers an incredible piece of cinematography. It’s great storytelling by a great medium from a master and to be part of it, it’s special.”
