Oprah Winfrey Debuts New Footage from ‘The Color Purple,’ Says Musical Will Leave Fans ‘Feeling Full’ (Exclusive)

Purple the movie musical is in just over three months!

On Friday, Warner Bros. Pictures shared new footage from the film exclusively with PEOPLE, paired with on-set interviews with cast members, director Blitz Bazawule and producer Oprah Winfrey praising the upcoming film.

“There is nothing that has been more important or vital to me culturally or artistically than Purple. It’s a solid base of spiritual and emotional power for me,” Winfrey, 69, says in the video. “Every woman and man who’s been invisible, who’s felt unseen and unappreciated, this is their story.”

The star earned an Academy Award nomination for her role as Sofia in Steven Spielberg’s original 1985 film.

The new footage teases a look at many of the film’s main characters, including Halle Bailey as Nettie, Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, HER as Squeak, Danielle Brooks as Sofia, Jon Batiste as Grady and Fantasia Barrino as Celie in her feature film debut. among others.

Director Bazawula, who made his directorial debut in 2018 Burial Kojo, notes in the clip that the original film remains “one of the cornerstones of culture, certainly black culture.”

“It’s a story about finding yourself and living and going for it, no matter what,” Henson, 53, captioned the film, while HER, 26, added, “You get to see all these strong women shine and be who they really are meant to be. .”

The film’s official description calls it “a bold new take on a beloved classic” about the “extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share an unbreakable bond.”

Written by screenwriter Marcus Gardley PurpleScreenplay based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name and a musical that featured a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. The cast of the film also includes Louis Gossett Jr., David Alan Grier, Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Ciara and Deon Cole, among others.

Purple it’s in theaters on December 25.
