The day-long event promises a revolution in education and psychological health. To understand how trauma affects learning and the human psyche, renowned leaders in the field came together. Hema Parbhoo, an industrial psychologist, says she attended the conference because of her passion for Winfrey and her work.
We are all Oprah fans. I have been practicing psychology for over 20 years and was also affected by trauma. “I am here with an open mind and a desire to understand healing,” Parbhoo said. Experts will facilitate insightful discussions that explore creative approaches to developing informed responses to trauma. Attendees will learn about the far-reaching effects of untreated trauma, and most importantly, they will learn effective ways to help those who have faced difficulties. Executive coach Anne Wafula said she was looking for just that. From the age of 20 to 30, she trains female athletes. Wafula noted, “I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how trauma affects a person’s potential or prevents them from reaching their full potential.”
Leslie Moloto, a physics instructor at the African Leadership Academy, says trauma plays out in the classroom. In her observation, students who deal with trauma become withdrawn and find it difficult to learn. The children are present, but not in the classroom. Our company has a wellness department. I am the first point of contact as I am a teacher and want to learn new skills. It is an opportunity to acquire new skills, Moloto believes. Winfrey is a living example of the transformative potential of healing and resilience.
