Wildlife photographer Jim captured the stunning sight last week and challenged social media users to guess which way the mare was looking.
Judging by the internet’s reaction, she may be headed for another “white and gold or black and blue dress” pandemonium that took the internet by storm as netizens argued over the right color.
He photographed the horse taking a walk in Derbyshire after noticing how perfectly aligned it was with a glorious morning sunrise.
“Horses and sunrises go very well together,” he explained.
However, due to the bright light that outlines its head, it is very difficult to tell where the horse is actually looking.
Jim knew he had stumbled upon something worth posting and took to Facebook to challenge his friends to find the correct answer.
However, the illusion quickly took hold and was busy confounding thousands.
He wrote: “What a stunning sunrise this morning, the question is is the horse facing me or the other way. It will take a while to answer but I love these because the more you look the more insecure you become.”
He explained: “People are literally split down the middle.
“Half the people think it looks one way and the other half think it looks another. It’s very popular. You get more unsure of your answer the more you look at it.
“Thousands of people have interacted with it and commented. Nobody really knows. It’s been more popular than I expected.”
“With an orange sky sunrise, anything you put in front of it becomes a silhouette. The area I go to is fantastic for sunrises.
“You have to get them at the right angle. I walked so the sun was in the right position. He was a friendly little guy.”
After sharing the image online, users flooded into comments to try to figure it out and debate the answers.
One posted: “Beautiful. One minute the horse is looking up at the sunrise, look back and he’s looking up at the camera, fantastic.”
Another said: “That’s hard. I thought about it at first, but now I’m not so sure.”
“Wow, that’s awesome, it could be both. I mean far, but I have to say it,” said a third.
The photographer confirmed that the horse was actually on camera.
Meanwhile, another optical illusion of a horse asks viewers to determine if the animal is walking forward or backward.
A viral video of a moving horse is believed to reveal which side of your brain is more dominant, and what you’re more likely to be good at.
