Optical illusion shows how your mind is tricked by moving colors but people disagree – what do you see?

A TIKTOK optical illusion video has viewers’ heads in a spin – as it shows how our own brains can trick us.

It shows yellow-and-blue blocks moving slowly across a field of black-and-white stripes and then a disc with radiating stripes.

What do you see as the colored blocks move across the stripes?

TikTokker Dean Jackson explains that for most people, the colored blocks appear to travel in a “stepping” motion across the stripes.

First, the blue seems to inch ahead while the yellow stays still, then the blue appears to stop and the yellow leapfrogs in front.

But it’s all an illusion caused by how our own brains perceive the colors against the light and dark background.

Dean shows what’s really happening by fading the background stripes to gray.

He explains: “There are two surprising things about the paddles.

“The first is that they are moving perfectly smoothly the whole time.

“The juddering effect is just as they cross the lines.

“The second thing, which is even more surprising, is that they are absolutely level with each other the whole time.”

He adds: “If you want to double-check this, you can go back and tap the screen to freeze it at any point.

“And you’ll see that they are totally level… always.”

British radio host Dean shared the illusion with his 500,000 followers on TikTok.

Earlier this month another of Dean’s mind-bending illusions showed how our brains can play tricks on us.

He shared a picture of traffic lights with a filter to block out red light.

Our brains make us think we can see a red light even though it is actually gray.

“It’s your brain working overtime convincing you of the red,” he says.

Another of Dean’s illusions shows a familiar Coca-Cola can.

Viewers said their minds were blown to discover the image contains no red at all.
