Jay mysteriously disappeared after making a frantic 8am phone call to his friend Lucy Mae – saying he was “in the middle of nowhere”.

A desperate search for the teenager was quickly launched with the mountain rescue service, firefighters, drones, sniffer dogs and police helicopters.

Worried friend Lucy now said: “Something strange is happening. It’s suspicious. In two days you will tell me that someone did not see him.

“There is a restaurant 10 minutes away that he would have seen or passed by. It’s suspicious and strange.”

It comes as…

Fighting back tears, Lucy today said her friend was “not stupid” and called her from the end of a “full mountaineer” in “broad daylight”.

She added: “To be fair, it only opened in two hours, but if it were me, I would sit and wait in the restaurant until it opened.

“As soon as it opened, I’d say ‘Please can you put my phone on charge’ and then I’d call somebody, I’d call a taxi.”

Officers said they were keeping an “open mind” about Jay’s disappearance on the third day of a massive search.

Jay, an apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire, flew to Tenerife with friends Lucy and Brad for the New Rave Generation (NRG) 2024 festival, which ended on Sunday.

On Sunday night, he left the rave with two other men he had just met to go to their flat, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Jay’s last known location was the Teno Rural Park in the northwest of the island – a popular hiking spot among tourists.

He shared a post on Snapchat on Sunday night before he disappeared, showing the teenager smiling with friends.

It was filmed around 8:30 p.m. in the Arona area of Santa de Cruz in the south of the island, where the festival was held.

After calling Lucy at 8am on Monday, a missing person report was filed around 9am and the search began.

Jay’s mum Debbie Duncan and older brother Zak flew out on Tuesday to join the effort.

He sounded very shaken up… now I’m wondering if he was shaken up just because he didn’t have water or because of something else

Lucy Mae, Jay’s friend

An emotional Lucy said today: “I was up there every day myself. Something is wrong. The police are not telling me anything.”

Recalling their last conversation on Monday, she said: “I left the festival to go back to the hotel early because I was tired. Jay stayed with the two new friends he had made.

“I received that last call from Jay around eight in the morning.

“He just told me: ‘I need a drink, it’s very hot, I don’t know where I am and my phone is going to break. I said, ‘If you’re ever going to listen to anything I’m going to tell you, it’s got to be now.

“If you’re in the middle of nowhere, with no water and no phone, you’re going to be **** so you should turn around and go back to wherever you came from and look for help.

“He says: ‘I can’t go back, I don’t know where I am.’ But he sounded very upset and I don’t know what’s going on and now I’m thinking if he was just upset because he didn’t have water or because of something else.”

FAMILIES HURT

Debbie’s partner Andy Watson told Lancashire Live that police urged the family to get to the island as soon as possible in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

He said: “It was about 2.30am in the early hours.

“The police said ‘the best thing you can do is get out’, we knew it was bad.

“This was his first vacation on his own. I just hope he went to another party.”

A stricken Debbie flew out of Manchester Airport by 7am that morning.

Andy (63) added that “every mum who has a child out there went to help”.

Mum Debbie said yesterday that during the search she was bombarded with horrible jokes from trolls who claimed to have kidnapped Jay.

She told how British people with a “northern accent” called her from blocked numbers, claiming that they had her son in captivity and that they were holding him because he owed them money.

Debbie said: “I just don’t know why people would want to do things like this. I’ve been getting a lot of jokes. It’s disgusting.

“People call me and say they have Jay because he owes them money.”

She told reporters in Tenerife: “Obviously I’m beside myself with worry and that’s why I flew here with my eldest son to do everything we can to help.”

ACTION SEARCH FOR THE MAMMOTH

A major search is set to resume early today near the village of Masca, in the northwest of the island near his last known location, the Manchester Evening News reports.

The “Missing Jay Slater” Facebook group, which gained nearly 140,000 members in just days, said officers were pulling over drivers in the area to show them Jay’s photo.

Fiona Duncan, possibly Jay’s maternal aunt, posted on the site today that she would be traveling to help with Jay’s uncle and promised to find him.

She wrote: “Me, Jay’s uncle and sister-in-law are flying out today at 3pm to look for Jay.

“I just want to thank everyone for the kind words and support. We will find him.”

Debbie told MailOnline today that she will not be going to the mountains to help with the search, but will wait for news from Los Cristianos in the south.

She said: “We haven’t had any real news but I’m waiting for news from the British consulate.

“There was talk of a helicopter flying over the area today but I can’t face going up there, I’ll stay here in Los Cristianos and wait for the news.

“His friends and Lucy are up there helping, and I have more family coming over today.

“We all just want him to be found alive and well as soon as possible.”
