Pandu was a South Indian actor and comedian who played various comedy roles in several Tamil films. Pandu died of COVID-19 after being tested positive for the virus. His wife Kumuda was also tested positive for the virus and is currently being treated in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Chennai.

Pandu was born on Wednesday, February 19, 1947 (aged 74 at the time of his death) in Komarapalayam, Tamil Nadu. His zodiac sign was Pisces. After completing his schooling, Pandu did not want to go to college as the courses offered by colleges were five years long. However, his teacher convinced him to take the examinations of the College of Art, which Pandu passed with first class honors. Pandu received a government scholarship and enrolled in the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, for a postgraduate degree in Art and Design. He then went to France to pursue a PhD in Art and Design.

Profession
Pandu started his career as a designer and painter. He got the opportunity to design the Tamil Nadu Tourism logo, the “Umbrella”. After completing the design, Pandu received a cash prize of Rs. 20,000. Pandu has designed more than 250 logos for various organizations, including the logo of SUN TV. He designed the “Two Leaves” party emblem for the All India Anand Ravidha party under the supervision of the party’s leader Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran (MGR). In 1975, Pandu started his own brass and aluminum business in Chennai. The company was called Prapanj Unlimited and was run by him and his son Panju. He also had a company called Capital Letters, which was engaged in designing nameplates for offices and houses of the Tamil film industry. Pandu made his debut in the showbiz industry in Karaiyellam Shenbagapoo (1981), starring alongside his brother Idichapuli Selvaraj. Pandu played a supporting role in the film Kadar Kotai with Ajith Kumar. His performance in the film was critically acclaimed and established him as a renowned actor.

Over the years, he has played many supporting roles in films such as Chinna Madam (1994), Mayabazar (1995), Take It Easy Urvashi (1996) and Panjumittai (2018). In 2007, Pandu made his television debut as an actor with Dhinam Dhinam Deepavali. In 2013, Pandu was roped in to play a comedic role in the Tamil film Vellachi. The film starred his son Pintu Pandu. Pandu’s last film was Indha Nilai Maarum in 2020.

Pandu and his wife Kumudha were tested positive for Covid-19 and were admitted to a private hospital in Chennai. Unfortunately, Pandu passed away on May 6, 2021. His wife remains under strict observation in the ICU.

- Pandu followed a practice of designing all his logos during the Brahma Muhurtam (i.e. early morning). If he could not complete the design within this time, he would stop working and continue the next day.
- Pandu loved to paint and once he displayed all his paintings in an exhibition. In the exhibition, Pandu revealed that he painted most of his paintings with his fingertips as it brought him a kind of happiness and also gave his paintings a better look.
- After learning about Pandu’s death, filmmaker and director G Dhananjayan posted a tweet on his Twitter account, expressing condolences to Pandu’s family.
