Pankaj Tripathi is an Indian actor who works mainly in Bollywood. He is known for his natural acting skills. The actor rose to fame for his supporting role in the film Gangs of Wasseypur, in which he essayed the role of ‘Sultan’.

Pankaj Tripathi was born on September 5, 1976 (47 years old; as of 2023) in Belsand, a small town in Gopalganj district in the Indian state of Bihar. He studied at DPH School in Gopalganj. Tripathi has been inclined towards acting since childhood and at just 12 years old, he started performing as a “Girl Artist” at the “Chhath Festivals” in his village.
Tripathi’s father wanted him to become a doctor and sent him to Patna for higher education. While studying there, he joined the ABVP and actively participated in university politics. He is an eloquent speaker. Pankaj is also good at sports and has represented the university in high jump and 100-meter dash. After completing his university education, he took a hotel management course and worked as a “chef” at the Peacock Hotel for two years.

Profession
It was in Patna that the actor became more interested in art. He started attending various theater performances; asking them if he could act too. In 1995, he starred in the drama adaptation of Bhism Sahni’s Leela Nandlal story, directed by Vijay Kumar (NSD Productions). A minor character as a local thief. His performance was highly appreciated by the audience and the media. From then on, he became a regular theater artist and practiced for about four years.
After spending seven years in Patna, Pankaj moved to Delhi. He attended the National Academy of Drama and graduated in 2004. Later, he returned to Patna and performed theater for four months.
On 16 October 2004, Tripathi moved to Mumbai and played an uncredited role in the film Run, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Vijay Raaz. He had several small roles in movies and television before landing a major role in the TV series Gulal.
While shooting for Gulal, Pankaj got a call to audition for Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur. The audition lasted about 8 hours, and he finally got the role of “Sultan”. His performance in the film was well received by the audience and led to him receiving more invitations from film producers. His works “Fukrey”, “Manjhi: The Mountain Man” and “Masaan” were also well received by critics and audiences.
In 2017, Tripathi played a leading role for the first time in the movie Gurgaon.

- On September 11, 2023, Pankaj inaugurated the library of a school in Bersund, Bihar, as a tribute to his father.

- In an interview, Pankaj Tripathi while talking about his love for food expressed his fondness for bhujiya as his favorite dish in Bihari cuisine. He added that if he were to open a restaurant, he would like to promote Bihari and Jharkhand cuisine. He said,
Mujhey bhaat, dal aur bhujiya mil jaye to mujhey kuch nahi chahiye sansaar mein (If I get rice, dal and chips, then I don’t need anything else in the world). The purity of these dishes, so good for your stomach, is what Bihar food is all about. If I open a restaurant in the future, I will try to popularize Bihari and Jharkhand cuisine. “
- On October 17, 2023, Pankaj Tripathi won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for the movie “Mimi”. The award was presented to him by the President of India, Drupadi Murmu.

- Pankaj Tripathi in an interview talked about playing the role of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the movie Main Atal Hoon (2024). He revealed that Attar was his favorite leader. He recalled hearing him speak in Patna in 1995-96 and, despite his best efforts, could not see him in the crowd. Pankaj added that he also spotted actor Shatrughan Sinha in the crowd and this was the first time he met an actor in real life.
