The battle for legacy
Since the death of Ram Vilas Paswan in 2021, his son Chirag Paswan and brother Pashupati Kumar Paras Pashupati Kumar Paras has engaged in an ongoing rivalry over the legacy of Ram Vilas Paswan. Chirag had hoped to succeed his father Ram Vilas as the sole leader of the Paswan community, but was disappointed when Paras replaced him as the leader of his father’s party, the BJP. Apparently, five of the six party MPs extended their support to Pashupati after the death of Ram Vilas. Later, Chirag claimed that his uncle’s election was illegal as Pashupati was elected as the BJP leader by suspended BJP members. Paras has repeatedly positioned himself as the political heir of Ram Vilas, arguing that Ram Vilas gave the Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency to him in the 2019 general elections instead of to Chi. Raghu. In a media chat, Paras explained why he considers himself Ram Vilas Paswan’s successor, saying:
I will explain why I call myself the political heir of “bade saheb”. He started serving as the MLA from Arauli in Bihar in 1969 and gave up the seat in 1977 when he became the MP from Hajipur. He asked me to contest for a parliamentary seat and even though I was in the government, I followed his orders. “
He further said,
He is my brother and my ideal. Today, I am saddened that two of my brothers passed away. I know many of you are coming to Chirag. Let me tell you clearly that I am Paswangi’s true political heir. Chirag Paswan is definitely his son, but he is not and cannot be his political heir. He had absolute rights to his father’s assets under Hindu inheritance laws. “
