Passenger Pretends to Be Asleep to Avoid Raising Their Reclined Seat on 9-Hour Flight — Leaving Fellow Traveler Mad

An airplane passenger wonders if they made a mistake after reclining their seat during a long flight.

In a Reddit post “Am I A——?” forum, a passenger said they were trying to get some shut-eye on a nine-hour international flight from Dallas to Paris when another passenger asked them not to recline their seats.

“Almost immediately, the girl behind me taps me on the shoulder and asks me to pull out my seat, which I do, but then asks me why,” the person wrote. “She said the baby was in the car seat behind her, so she couldn’t recline, and if I leaned my seat back, she couldn’t actually see the TV screen on the back of my seat.”

Agreeing to another passenger’s request, the Redditor quickly discovered that they couldn’t sleep unless they reclined their seat.

After continuing to recheck their seat and also telling the woman there was a nearby free seat in the middle section of the flight she could move to, the flight attendant said the woman was not happy with the suggestion and continued to warn the flight attendant to complain about the seating situation.

However, the flight attendant told the disgruntled passenger that there was nothing she could do about lying down, the passenger wrote.

“The girl then got the attention of two more flight attendants, who all said the same thing and offered the same seat I told her about,” the Redditor continued. “The thing is, we were in the window seat and the girl complained that she chose that seat because it was a window seat and she refused to move. Meanwhile, I was pretending to be asleep the whole time.”

Finally, the passengers wrote that they felt bad for that other person, but that they did not want to move because they were more comfortable being next to someone they knew. They added that their mom “gets super anxious when flying.”

Several Reddit users sided with passengers in the comments section of the post, stating that people should be expected to recline their seats on airplanes.

“Planes are shit,” wrote one person candidly. “It’s unfortunate to have the seat down in front of you. It’s less of a nuisance than not being able to put your own seat down. And if you didn’t need to lean back, the seats just wouldn’t recline.”

Another said: “Airlines allow you to recline, it’s part of the seat, part of your right.”

A third commentator, meanwhile, said people need to understand that traveling on public transport – especially in economy class – means they’re “sharing a small space with a bunch of people”.
