Since 2002, he has been a coach for the Northwestern University Wildcats football team, most recently serving as its head coach from 2006 until 2023. At the time, he was 31 years old, making him by five years the youngest head football coach in the Big Ten Conference and NCAA Division I FBS.

From 1993 until 1996, Fitzgerald was a linebacker for Northwestern. He twice received the Chuck Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy for being the finest defensive player in college football. Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008, he received a Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1997.

In his role as head coach, Fitzgerald took Northwestern to five bowl games, winning the 2012 Rose Bowl in the process. In 17 seasons, he had a 110-101 record. In 2018, he received the Big Ten Coach of the Year award.

He was awarded a Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1997 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
