After a protracted court struggle over questionable expenditure claims, Patrick Brazeau’s charges of fraud and breach of trust were dropped by the Crown on Wednesday, allowing the Quebec senator to take his place in the Red Chamber once again.
According to Christian Deslauriers, Brazeau’s attorney, “as you know, my client had many difficulties with his personal life.” he told reporters outside the courthouse. Brazeau will return to the Senate, he said, adding that he was unsure of when. “He’s very happy that the charges have been dropped,” he added.
Deslauriers claimed that the RCMP’s choice to charge Brazeau was a costly error that drained police resources and caused Brazeau significant emotional suffering, which eventually resulted in a botched suicide attempt.
To put it bluntly, it was a huge financial waste that these allegations were allowed to move through. This has now devastated Mr. Brazeau for three years. He’s been finding this difficult. Since then, Mr. Brazeau has had a hellish life.
The attorney said that Deloitte and KPMG, two accounting companies, had examined Brazeau’s living expenditures and deemed the residency regulations to be, at best, hazy. Additionally, he said that his client only submitted expense claims after receiving permission from Senate financial officers.
When asked if he believed the office of former prime minister Stephen Harper pressured the RCMP to prosecute charges in spite of the conclusions of independent auditors, Deslauriers responded, “If there was any political interference, I can’t prove it, [but] I can believe in it.”
According to the RCMP, Brazeau lied about his principal location, which is 135 kilometres north of Ottawa in Maniwaki, Quebec, in order to get a housing stipend that is only given to senators who reside outside the National Capital Region.
On Wednesday, Brazeau tweeted a jab at Harper, claiming the former prime minister could now formally resign from the House of Commons and give up his claim to parliamentary privilege because all criminal investigations into Senate spending had been completed.
