Patriots’ Day 2023: Patriots’ Day, also known as the National Day of Service and Remembrance, is celebrated on September 11 every year. The day is marked in memory of the fallen people and heroes in the Al-Qaeda attack on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia in 2001. No, Patriot’s Day is not a public holiday in the United States. On this day, all federal government offices, schools and most businesses are open. Also, that day is marked with various commemorative ceremonies in memory of the 2,977 victims and heroes of the deadly attack.
Is it Memorial Day or Patriots Day?
National Day of Service and Remembrance or Patriot Day are just two different names for commemorating the same event. In a joint resolution passed on December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), Congress declared September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day”, and in Public Law 111-13, passed on April 21, 2009, Congress requested that the observance Recognize September 11 as the annual “National Day of Service and Remembrance.”
This year will also mark the joint commemoration of the Day of Patriotism and the National Day of Service and Remembrance. According to the official White House website, “USA, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2023, as Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance.”
How is the National Day of Service and Remembrance celebrated?
On this occasion, the American flag is flown at half-mast on all US federal buildings and organizations around the world, including the White House. At 8:46 a.m., the exact hour when the first jetliner, American Airlines Flight 11, hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The act was followed by a moment of silence in memory of the attacks.
President Joe Biden also asked the nation to honor the lost souls. He said, “I urge the citizens of the United States to participate in community service in honor of those our nation has lost, to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including memorial services, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time in honor of the innocent victims who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.”
Also, Patriot Day (September 11) should not be confused with Patriot Day (April), also known as Patriot Day. It is observed on the third Monday in April to commemorate the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775, which were two of the earliest battles of the American Revolutionary War.
