PBA

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is a men’s professional basketball league in the Philippines. It started in 1975, making it the oldest professional basketball league in Asia and the second oldest in the world after the NBA in North America.

The PBA has twelve teams, each representing different companies. They play three major tournaments in a season: the Philippine Cup, the Commissioner’s Cup and the Governor’s Cup. The Philippine Cup is special because only Filipino players can participate and is considered the most important tournament.

Teams may hire one foreign player, called an “import”, for the Commissioner’s and Governor’s Cups. Each tournament includes a round-robin stage followed by a playoff to determine the winner. Winning all three tournaments in a season is called a Grand Slam, which is a significant achievement.

The San Miguel Beermen are the most successful team in PBA history, with 29 championships, including the Grand Slam in 1989. They have won the most titles in each tournament. Another successful team, the Crispa Redmanizers, also achieved Grand Slam victories.

The PBA is popular, with millions of viewers watching every game. It also has a developmental league, the PBA D-League, to nurture young talent. All in all, the PBA plays a big role in Philippine sports and culture.

PBA eligibility criteria

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has specific rules on who can play and coach in the league.

Player Eligibility:

  • Players must be natural-born Filipino citizens born in the Philippines to participate in the PBA.

  • Filipino players born outside the Philippines are considered Filipino aliens and must prove their Philippine citizenship with documents from the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Immigration.

  • Foreigners and naturalized Filipino citizens can only play as imported players and only in certain conferences.

  • Teams may have a maximum of five to seven Filipino foreigners on their roster.

  • Imports are not assembled; they are hired directly by teams and there may be height restrictions for them.

Trainer eligibility:

  • Head coaching positions are generally reserved for Filipino nationals.

  • Foreigners can become head coaches if they acquire permanent residency, for example by marrying a Filipino or holding a Special Resident Retirement Visa (SRRV).

  • This restriction on foreigners becoming head coaches has been in place since 1991.

In general, the PBA has strict eligibility criteria to ensure that Filipino players and coaches have the opportunity to participate and lead teams in the league.
