Peter Doig News
It might be a catastrophic failure,” chuckles Peter Doig. Concerned about his impending exhibition at the Courtauld Institute of Art is the 63-year-old painter. Rarely is a living artist considered deserving enough to have their works displayed with the Cézannes, Gauguins, Manets, Monets, and Renoirs in the prestigious London gallery.
The Scottish-born artist continues, “I know Frank Auerbach presented his building site paintings there. Admittedly, that was 13 years ago. The Courtauld’s temporary exhibition hall, named the Denise Coates Exhibition Galleries after the millionaire founder of Bet365, has only ever presented huge exhibitions by deceased artists since it reopened in late 2021 following a £57 million renovation. Van Gogh came first, followed by Edvard Munch, and Henry Fuseli came last.
He might not need to worry. Regardless of what you may think of Van Gogh, Munch, or Fuseli, not a single one of their paintings ever brought £5.7 million at auction while they were still alive. This occurred in 2007 when Doig’s work White Canoe, which was estimated to bring in £1 million, sold for a sum that temporarily elevated Doig to the position of most expensive living painter in Europe. Not that he saw the money, but Charles Saatchi was the rightful owner of the picture. The transaction, which Doig perceived as a sign of a deranged art market, helped build his fame while also dispelling allegations that the artwork had died.

Doig, a notorious deadline breacher, hasn’t completed the paintings for the exhibition, which increases the risk. He looks as exhausted as anyone who has been up working till 4am would look as he coughs and splutters his way through the interview at his home-cum-studio in east London. To better concentrate on the eight to ten paintings he hopes to display, he sent his second wife, Parinaz Mogadassi, and their three small children on a trip to Paris.
He complains, “I’m coughing constantly from the fumes.” Paint fumes have long been a health risk at work; Doig frequently gets sinus congestion from the thinners he uses, and working in the studio with the windows closed during a cold London winter only makes things worse. It’s not a very healthy way of living, he asserts.
But he persists, frequently staying up late to finish his projects or painstakingly polish them so they stand out next to the Courtauld jewels, like Seurat’s studies for La Grande Jatte, Cézanne’s bathers and Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère. “It’s daunting to display your work right next to works of art with that calibre and background. Basically, you’re there to get beat up.
