Peter Frampton Is 'Overwhelmingly Thankful' for 60-Plus Year Career: 'It Always Blows Me Away' (Exclusive)

Amid a string of musical accolades spanning six decades of his legendary music career, Peter Frampton says he is at a “pretty amazing” time in his life.

The singer, 74, whose 2024 is marked by his upcoming induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October, as well as the honor of receiving the Les Paul Spirit Award at a private ceremony in Nashville last Sunday, tells PEOPLE, “the hits keep coming.”

“It’s been pretty phenomenal so far this year,” notes Frampton. “I always thought— [be] in the moment and whatever happens, happens, you know? So I never expected anything. I just go back and borrow deeper into my music and things seem to happen along the way.”

The first honor coming to Frampton in 2024, the Les Paul Spirit Award, “is presented to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of the late, great Les Paul through innovation, engineering, technology and/or music,” according to a statement from the organizations.

The singer tells PEOPLE that the first time he received the award in honor of his late friend and renowned music pioneer more than 20 years ago was “fantastic,” while claiming this year’s honor is “something even more incredible.”

Frampton will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October, along with Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Mary J. Blige, Foreigner and several other music legends. The star says he “never expected” the honor, but notes that “I’m thrilled to have a record in the same area as all these amazing, talented, legendary people.”

From Cher to Ozzy Osbourne and Mary J. Blige, meet the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Famers.

“I know I’m talented, but I think luck has a lot to do with it and how you deal with what you have,” he says. “I could [have] stay[ed] at home in my bedroom when I was 10 or whatever… But on the weekend I took my guitar to a local gig.”

The “Show Me the Way” singer reflects on being “very busy when he was young,” but emphasizes how those “braves” led to “playing with all these really great musicians” who helped influence and shape his career.

Overall, Frampton finds the love he’s been getting from the music community “overwhelming,” in a positive way.

“I said that word, but it’s, this period for me is an extremely rewarding period, these things, I just had no idea that I would be doing this for 60 years,” he says of his career as a whole.
