Peter Isacksen News

I stumbled into a “Battle of the Network Stars” replay from the late 1970s around six months ago while channel surfing.

Competitors like Gabe Kaplan, Dan Haggerty, and Valerie Bertinelli were introduced by Howard Cosell. “Hailing from Fullerton, Calif., Peter Isacksen,” he said in that distinctive Cosell manner as he approached the tall, slender, blond actor.

I knew Isacksen appeared in the NBC sitcom “CPO Sharkey,” but I had no idea he was a Fullerton native. He attended Sunny Hills High School and graduated there in 1972, according to some research I completed.

A few months later, at the Hollywood Autograph Show, I was roaming the ballroom of the LAX Westin Hotel. Isacksen, another Fullerton native, was seated there between Ed Asner and Kevin’s sister from “The Wonder Years.” He was posing for pictures with admirers, signing autographs, and telling tales from his career.

I gave him my name and that I was a columnist for the Fullerton News Tribune. He was approachable and kind, as you might expect a Fullertonian to be, and before I knew it, I was sitting with him behind the signature table and we were talking about our home city.

It turns out that although he was born and raised in New Hampshire, his father, Ed, was relocated to California before Peter’s final year of high school by the apparel firm Dickies. His initial impression of California was that “the people and the weather were warm, and there were no bugs!”

The Isacksen family purchased a home in the Las Palmas neighbourhood, directly across the street from well-known realtor Tom Key. Peter knew he wanted to be an actor before he even got to Sunny Hills High School.

Isacksen worked at the Jack in the Box on Berkeley Avenue and Harbour Boulevard while still in high school. It was probably simply Isacksen practising his impressions and developing his comedic skills back then if you ordered a Jumbo Jack from the drive-through clown and he sounded a lot like John Wayne or President Richard Nixon.

Isacksen attended Fullerton College after high school, “but that didn’t really work out too well.” Although he played in “The Fantastics” at the Muckenthaler Cultural Centre, he didn’t act in any performances there.
