Peter Renaday, Voice of Master Splinter on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cartoon, Dies at 89

Peter Renaday, voice actor best known as Master Splinter on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is dead. He was 89 years old.

His death was confirmed to PEOPLE by his agent. TMZ reports that law enforcement officers performed a welfare check on his Burbank home on Sunday and found him dead inside.

His niece, Mindy Zachary, told the outlet that his air conditioner was broken and that his family believes his death does not need further investigation. Renaday’s death appears to have been natural, TMZ reports. PEOPLE has reached out to the Burbank Police Department for comment.

His friends and former colleagues, including Townsend Coleman, Cam Clarke, Sam Kwasman and Ike Eisenmann, took to social media to announce the news.

Coleman, who voiced Michaelangelo Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtleswrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 10: “Guys, I am devastated this morning to learn that our dear sensei, Peter Renaday, passed away yesterday. Pete was one of the most genuine, salt of the earth people I have ever known and will be greatly missed. miss you.”

He said the two had only seen each other a month ago and that Renaday is “as vibrant as ever, at 89, just as adorably crazy, smart and talented as I’ve always known him to be.”

Kwasman shared similar sentiments, writing on Facebook: “It is with great sadness that I have to report that my good friend Peter Renaday, who was the voice of Mickey Mouse among dozens of other voices, passed away this week.”

He recalled how the two often had lunch with other voice actors “every few months,” adding, “I’m going to miss his stories about the theater and working for Disney. I’m going to miss him a lot.”

“I just found out that Peter Renaday has passed away,” Eisenmann wrote on X. “I worked with Peter for many years in voice over. He was a gentle, fascinating man and one of the greatest and most prolific voice artists in the business. Rest in peace my friend.”

“To my dear Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans, many of you have heard by now, but we have just lost our amazing Sensei, Master Splinter and dearest friend, Peter Renaday. As I write this, with tears in my eyes, it’s hard to see enough to write this post” , Clarke wrote on Facebook, recalling seeing Renaday while celebrating his 88th birthday.
