Phil Hartman was a Canadian-born Canadian-American actor, voice actor, comedian, playwright and graphic designer. He worked as a graphic designer for the bands America and Poco. Hartman was best known for his role on the television show Saturday Night Live. He won a Primetime Emmy Award, became a talk show announcer and worked on Saturday Night Live. From 1991 to 1998, he provided voices for the animated TV series The Simpsons.

He was the fourth of eight children born to Doris Marguerite and Rupert Loebig Hartmann, a building materials merchant. Hartman and his family immigrated to the United States in 1958, and he became an American citizen in 1990. He is of German, Irish, and English descent. Hartman attended Westchester High School and was known as the class clown. After graduation, he went on to study painting at Santa Monica City College.

Hartman joined the ensemble The Groundlings in 1979 and quickly became famous. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 1985 feature film Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and appeared as a reporter in it. He successfully auditioned for the NBC variety program Saturday Night Live (SNL) after starring in the films Jumpin’ Jack Flash and There Amigos in 1986.
