News about Phyllis Yvonne Stickney
Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, an actress and comedian, was one of the hottest young stars in Hollywood from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s. She won over audiences and critics with a series of film roles, including What’s Love Got to Do With It, Malcolm X, and the television show A Different World. However, just as she was about to reach her zenith, Stickney essentially disappeared from the spotlight.
Now he tells us exclusively what he’s been up to for more than ten years, including how he transformed the once drug-ridden St James Court building into Harlem and launched several new businesses.
“There was a block in Harlem that had a drug problem. I left, I got the apartment, and after I became famous, I came back to save the building. They took my life for 5 years,” she says. In my building, I closed down three crack houses and a heroin shooting range. In essence, I became a social worker.
The Harlem Arts Alliance member also suffered professional losses as a result of her personal life, which included a divorce. “I tried to focus on getting married and having children. My inability to conceive later with my husband ended our marriage. So I went back to work.”
Stickney acknowledges the decline in high-demand jobs on popular TV shows like Californication and Boston Legal, but he has no regrets. Stickney developed new ventures over the years while continuing to refine his art. These efforts include a clothing line, directing and nurturing young talent through the Stickney Theater Project.
“It’s hard to connect and stay relevant to a generation that has forgotten what I went through. So I can pass that on to younger talent by being a poet, a designer and all those other things.
A reminder of August Wilson’s talent could also be useful for the current generation. With a new interpretation of Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning piano lesson, Signature Theater preserves Wilson’s legacy.
The Piano Lesson, the fourth work in August Wilson’s monumental Centenary Cycle, is a compelling drama that shows the Charles family struggling within their circumstances and against each other over their shared heirloom: an old piano. Rubén Santiago-Hudson’s new play had its world premiere last week and is currently running through December 16.
