Piper Laurie, Golden Globe Winner and Star of Carrie and Twin Peaks, Dies at 91

Piper Laurie — one of the last surviving stars from the golden age of Hollywood, known for her roles in Carrie and Twin Peaks – died. She was 91 years old.

Laurie’s manager, Marion Rosenberg, confirmed to PEOPLE that “Ms. Laurie passed away this morning in Los Angeles. She actually died of old age.”

“She was an extraordinary talent and an extraordinary human being,” Rosenberg said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Born Rosetta Jacobs in Detroit in 1932, Laurie made her film debut in 1950 at the age of 18, appearing in two films that year: Louis and Milkman.

In the former film, he played actor-turned-president Ronald Reagan, whom Laurie said in her 2011 memoir. Learning to live out loud she had a romantic relationship.

“When I was 9, my mother asked me if I would like to be in movies,” Laurie said The Wall Street Journal 2021 about her early passion for acting. “I was terribly excited about the idea. So she mailed me a coupon for the newspaper and my photo for the contest. Meanwhile, I wrote and directed the school play.”

She went on to say that “it took many years for me to believe in my own power”, as she suffered from anxiety while performing and took acting lessons.

“At one point I volunteered to do an improv. I did well and my confidence grew,” Laurie said.

In his interview with WSJLaurie revealed that her favorite role she played during her nearly 70-year career (the last roles were in 2018) was that of Margaret White, the “devil mother” of Sissy Spacek’s titular telekinetic character in 1976. Carriebased on the book of the same name by Stephen King.

“It was the first film I made in 15 years. I had fun,” she said.

Among Laurie’s accolades was an Emmy Award for her role in the 1986 TV movie. Promise and a Golden Globe for the role of Catherine Martell on Twin Peaks.

She was nominated for three Oscars: for Impostor (1961), Carrie and Children of a lesser God (1986).

Laurie is survived by a daughter, Anne Grace Morgenstern. Anne (52) is Laurie’s only child with her ex-husband Joe Morgenstern, with whom she was married for 20 years, from 1962 to 1982.
