At the heart of the entire series is Pikachu, the Pokémon mascot in every sense of the word. He was the first Pokémon to connect with fans and become a hit. But being so popular isn’t all sunshine and roses. There are a lot of things about him that are actually sad.
Considered by some to be a beginner
When starting any Pokémon game, the player must choose an initial Pokémon to train. While other names have been added to this list over the years, some of the classics are Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle.
However, sometimes Pikachu is also considered a starter Pokémon. Considering he’s generally considered the top Pokémon in the entire series, calling him a “starter” seems a bit demeaning of him.
Ash’s Pikachu never gets its next evolution
A big part of Pokémon is evolution. Most of them have at least one (if not multiple) evolutions they can go through, each of which brings with them huge physical changes as well as power upgrades. However, keep in mind that some have not evolved at all.
Pikachu can evolve in Raichus, but this never happens with Ash’s Pikachu. There are a number of reasons why this is the case for the series, but it boils down to the fact that the brand doesn’t want to lose its most beloved character.
Can’t choose my own life
Pikachu looks free. He’s clearly fond of Ash Ketchum, but he also likes to pull pranks in his spare time – provided Pikachu has some free time to talk between training and battles.
In fact, no matter how good the relationship between Pikachu and Xiaozhi is, Pikachu belongs to Xiaozhi. Pikachu basically has no say in what happens in his life, which is definitely a little sad.

Live the life of a superstar
Speaking of Pikachu’s lifestyle, it’s definitely an interesting one as far as Pokémon go. Naturally, Ash’s Pikachu has become something of a legend in his day. He challenged and defeated some of the strongest and baddest people in the game.
Since he’s such a well-known figure now, everyone is targeting Pikachu and Ash. There are trainers hoping to make a name for themselves by taking down Ash and his Pikachu, not to mention that Team Rocket has been hunting the duo for years. It’s hard to live with a goal on your back.

Feeling like no one is listening is enough to drive anyone crazy. This must be doubly true for all Pokémon who can only communicate by repeating a variant of their own name. After all, not every Pokémon can be as verbose as Team Rocket’s Mew.
However, this must have been particularly frustrating for Pikachu; he spent a lot of time leaving the Magic Ball with Ash, talking to him. Ash acts like he understands what Pikachu is saying, but it usually looks like he’s just joking. Maybe this is exactly how our own pets feel.

At first glance, Pikachu’s life seems pretty good. He roams the world with his best friend, engaging in almost endless mischief and adventure.
In fact, all of this is done to further Ash’s goal of becoming the best Pokémon trainer possible. Pikachu exists only to fight and improve Ash’s reputation. Ultimately, he’s the one doing all the heavy lifting on this journey.
Rarely see other Pikachu
It’s not uncommon for would-be trainers to encounter hordes of wild Pokémon and then try to capture one for training. In fact, it’s a bit bleak when fans stop to really think about it.
Probably one of the worst parts is that Pikachu rarely sees any members of his own species. Most of the time he seems happy to be traveling with Ash, but sometimes he wants to be with other Pikachu too.

Generally, Pokémon end up living in Poké Balls. Few of them spend much time outside of their portable pens outside of practice and competition.
Pikachu is one of them. Ash often has him travel outside of the Poké Ball, which is fine, but it doesn’t change the fact that Pikachu’s home is a small red and white sphere.

The relative intelligence levels of most Pokémon are debatable at best. Some people give the impression of being very intelligent and very aware of everything going on around them. While others are only slightly smarter than the Poké Ball they inhabit.
Let’s be honest, Pikachu has always come across as smart, intelligent, and conscious. This makes his life in a world of slavery and fighting all the more heartbreaking.
