Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: How To Find (& Catch) Chi-Yu

The goldfish Ruinous Legendary Chi-Yu can be found by players behind a sealed door in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, providing a rare postgame encounter.

Out of the four Ruinous Legendary Pokémon players can find in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the Dark-and Fire-type Chi-Yu hosts perhaps the furthest amount of exploration needed in comparison to its counterparts when breaking the seal on the FirescourgeShrine that contains it. Appearing at a staggering level 60, players will need to assemble an appropriate team if they desire to capture this rare Pokémon. With a ferocious Ability that shears away the defenses of a player’s roster of pocket monsters with ease, finding Chi-Yu is just one part of this challenging section of the post-game.

The Paldea Region hosts eight blue Ominous Stakes that players must interact with to unlock the door containing Chi-Yu. In the same vein as the other Ruinous Legendaries, Chi-Yu’s Ominous Stakes are only present after defeating the main narrative of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. While most blue Stakes are present in the North and East Provinces of Paldea, some outliers require players to remember certain landmarks within the open world.

When players open the Firescourge Shrine and engage in battle with Chi-Yu, they are quickly exposed to its Beads of Ruin Ability, which cuts their Pokémon’s Special Defense stat by 25%. Typically resisted by this statistic excusing Tera Types in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, the Fire-and Dark-type moves Chi-Yu prioritizes become far more effective in tandem with this trait. Therefore, players that find Chi-Yu and wish to capture the Legendary should be prepared with a team from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that takes advantage of the Pokémon’s weaknesses, the Water, Ground, Fighting, or Rock-types in particular.
