Pop Smoke was an American rapper, songwriter, and singer. He rose to fame after releasing the single “Welcome To The Party” in 2019. On February 19, 2020, he died during a home invasion at his residence in California.

Bashar Baraka Jackson, better known as Pop Smoke, was born in Brooklyn, New York on Tuesday, July 20, 1999 (age 20 at the time of his death). He was expelled from school for carrying a gun and therefore was unable to complete his studies. Afterwards, he was placed under house arrest for two years for possession of a weapon. At the age of 15, he received a scholarship to Rocktop Academy in Philadelphia, but unfortunately, due to some health issues, he was asked to leave the academy. The story behind his choice of the name Pop Smoke is that his grandmother used to call him Poppa and his childhood friends called him Smoke.

Pop Smoke started his career in 2018 with other recording artists like Jay Gwuapo by remixing some of the popular songs from the New York drill music. After studying, he moved in the direction of creating original music and released his debut single “MPR”. After that year, in 2019, he released another song “Flexing” which garnered 100,000 views in less than 24 hours. Soon after that, Pop Smoke signed with Victor Victor Worldwide, a subsidiary of Universal Music. One song that made him famous was his breakthrough single “Welcome To The Party”. The song was the lead single from his debut album “Meet The Woo”. He has done several collaborations with artists like Jackboys, Travis Scott, and more. In February 2020, “Meet The Woo 2” was released which featured songs like Quavo, Lil Tjay, A Boogie with da hoodie, and more. To the surprise of fans, five days later, the deluxe version of the album was released, which contained three new songs, sung by NAV, Gunna and PnB Rock.

On January 17, 2020, Pop Smoke was arrested by federal authorities at John F. Kennedy International Airport for vehicle theft. The owner of a Rolls-Royce Wraith (valued at $375,000) reported to police that the car was stolen after Smoke borrowed it while filming a music video in California. The car was found at Smoke’s mother’s home in Brooklyn. Smoke had to post a $250,000 bond to be released on bail.

On February 19, 2020, Pop Smoke died during a home invasion in Hollywood Hills, California. According to authorities, four masked men broke into the house around 4:30 a.m. and shot him twice. Police arrived at his residence within six minutes and rushed him to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Doctors pronounced him dead from a gunshot wound to the torso. On July 10, 2020, five men were arrested in connection with his murder and four were arrested. Those arrested are: Corey Walker (19), Keandre Rodgers (18), and two teenagers, aged 17 and 15.

A few months after his death, his family announced the creation of the “Shoot for the Stars” Foundation to help and inspire young people to stay on the right path and achieve their goals.
