Players have taken to the internet to declare that the ending to Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 has given them nightmares. The eagerly awaited second chapter to Poppy Playtime was released yesterday, May 5th, to a mixed response. However, its story seems to have stuck with players after finishing the game.
The Poppy Playtime story follows the shady workings of toy manufacturer Playtime.co, who carried out experiments on humans to force their consciousness into toys and ultimately made them into the vengeful killing machines which the player encounters throughout the game. While the first game focused on Experiment-1006 (aka. Huggy Wuggy) as the primary threat, his presumed defeat led the second chapter to introduce a new primary antagonist in the form of a bright pink creature with four extremely long limbs made of elasticated plastic who goes by the name of Mommy Long Legs.
Despite Mommy Long Legs’ role as a villain in Poppy Playtime Chapter 2, her death scene appears to have stuck with players such as TonsOfFunMan and Smeephorf, who have taken to Reddit with their reaction to the brutal moment. At the end of the game, Mommy Long Legs meets her demise at the hands of an industrial shredder, and although most would think of this as a victorious moment, having spent a large portion of the chapter’s runtime avoiding certain death at the hands of the spindly pink toy, players have found themselves wanting to turn off the shredder and spare her from her violent fate, or even to talk things out prior to even getting to that point. TonsOfFunMan claimed they “literally had nightmares from this after [seeing] it, and had trouble sleeping.”
A large part of these reactions seems to have come from the voice acting in the climactic moment, as some players praised Mommy Long Legs’ voice actor, Elsie Lovelock, for delivering some chilling screams for the character’s death scene to make the moment even more unsettling. Other players stated that they just felt sorry for Mommy Long Legs as a character in general, with some believing she was driven to her madness through loneliness due to being left alone with Playtime. Co’s abandoned projects for so long, giving her a different motive to Huggy Wuggy, who was exacting his revenge upon those who experimented on him.
Regardless of whether players find Mommy Long Legs’ final moments in Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 to be victorious or traumatizing, it’s safe to say that developer Mob Games has delivered a death scene that will stick with players for a long time to come. Unlike with Huggy Wuggy’s death, which was presumed and left open for his return, it’s likely that Mommy Long Legs won’t be returning from the shredder for any potential third chapter.
