Potential Carcinogen Found in 6 Popular Acne Products, Prompting Recall: FDA

The US Food and Medicines Administration has announced voluntarily recall of six widely available treatments against acne, saying that the products had a “elevated level” of Benzen, a well -known carcinogenic.

The agency has announced that after being concerned about Benzen levels in products containing benzoil peroxide, 95 acne products with an ingredient in the ingredient have been placed. Although the majority had “undiscovered or extremely low benzene levels,” six products showed the “elevated level” of Benzen.

Benzoil peroxide is effective in treating acne, according to the Cleveland clinic, because it “seems to reduce inflammation and kill or prevent bacteria growth on your skin.”

The FDA noted that the recalls do not “specifically indicate consumers to perform actions regarding the products currently in their possession.” The agency adds that “the risk of a person developing cancer for exposure to Benzen found in these products is very low,” and the recall is limited to withdrawing products from sales on network or in stores.

However, customers are advised to “check their products and throw products that are out of their expiration.”
