Prabhu was born on Tuesday, April 3, 1973, in Mysore, Karnataka (50 years; as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Aries. He received training in Bharatanatyam (Indian classical dance form) from Dharmaraj and Udupi Lakshminarayanan. He dropped out of school and assisted his father in choreographing South Indian films.

Prabhu was born into a Lingayat Hindu family. His father Mugur Sundar worked as a choreographer for South Indian films. His mother’s name was Mahadevamma. Prabhu has two brothers, Raju Sundaram and Nagendra Prasad, both choreographers.
Purab is reportedly in a relationship with his dance partner Ramlas. The two were in a live-in relationship and secretly married in 1995. Ramrat was a Muslim girl who converted to Hinduism after her marriage. She even changed her name from Ramlas to Rasha. Later, they gave birth to three sons: Vishal, Rishi Raghavendra Deva and Adhith Deva. In 2008, their eldest son Vishal died after a long battle with cancer. The two divorced on July 2, 2010, after which Prabhu admitted that the rumors of his relationship with actress Nayanthara were true.
After the divorce, he lived with Nayanthara. After dating for nearly three years, the couple separated. According to reports, Prabhu was not ready to marry Nayantara and this became the reason for their breakup.
In 2020, he married Indian doctor Himani Singh in a private ceremony during the COVID-19 lockdown. In June 2023, the couple welcomed a baby girl; their first child together.

Prabhu’s father is a famous South Indian film choreographer. Prabhu got the inspiration to work as a choreographer from his father and hence, he started assisting his father and accompanying him in his film shoots. He started his career as a choreographer for the Tamil film Vetri Vizha (1989). Before hitting the big screen, he worked as a choreographer in over 100 Hindi and regional films. Some of the popular songs he has choreographed include “Muqabala Muqabala” (Hum Se Hai Muqabla, 1994), “Urvashi Urvashi” (Hum Se Hai Muqabla, 1994) and “Kay Sera Sera” (Pukar, 2000).
He has acted in many Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada films. He worked as an actor in films such as “ABCD” (2013), “Lakshmi” (2018), “Pon Manikavir” (2019) and “Street Dancer” (2020).
He has also tried his hand at directing and some of his films include Shankardada Zindabad (2007), Wanted (2009), Ramaiya Vastavaiya (2013), Dabangg 3 (2019) and Radhe ( 2020).

Prabhu’s extramarital affair with Nayantara created a stir when his ex-wife Rasha filed a petition in the family court seeking an order to stop her husband from entering into a live-in relationship with Nayantara.
