UPSC IAS top student Pradeep Singh

Pradeep Singh is an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer from Haryana who topped the 2019 UPSC Civil Services Examination.

Pradeep Singh was born in 1991 (29 years old; 2020). His full name is Pradeep Singh Malik. Pradeep attended a local government school in his village till Class VII, after which he joined Shambhu Dayal Modern School, Sonipat, where he studied till Class XII. In 2012, he graduated from Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology (DCRUST), Murtal with a Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Science).

Family and caste

Pradeep was born and raised in a farmer’s family of the Jaat community.

Parents and siblings

His father, Sukhbir Singh Malik, was twice the village chief of Tewari, and his mother, Hira Devi, was a housewife. His elder brother, Ajit Singh, is a mechanical engineer working in the insurance industry. His younger sister, Manisha, is a graduate student in mathematics.

His father was in the village when the UPSC results were announced. He said,

Pradeep called me to tell me that he had passed the exam. When I asked him his score, he whispered that he had topped the exam.

Profession

After graduation, Pradeep prepared for the SSC CGL exam and was hired as an Income Tax Officer in 2015. Thereafter, in 2019, he cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2018; secured All India Rank 260 and was hired as an IAS Officer. However, the goal of becoming an IAS officer remained elusive, so he continued to prepare with hard work and determination. The hard work paid off on 4th August 2020, when UPSC announced the results of the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2019, with Pradeep Singh emerging as the top ranker.

  • Pradeep secured All India Rank 1 in his fourth attempt without any formal coaching from any institution. He initially took coaching to understand the preparation pattern; however, due to work constraints, he prepared on his own and with the help of his friends.
  • Pradeep spoke to the media after securing first rank in his fourth attempt and said,

    This is an incredible and unexpected moment for me. It is a very surprising moment and I didn’t expect that I would be number one. I am very happy and my family and friends are also very happy. ”

  • Pradeep credits his father as the main motivation for this achievement. He says that despite all odds, his father has been his pillar of support throughout his journey. Recalling the period when he decided to give up preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, he says,

    There were times when I felt that it was impossible to prepare for the UPSC exam while working and even thought of giving up on my preparations. However, my father told me, “No, if you are passionate about becoming an IAS officer, you can definitely squeeze in the necessary time to prepare for the exam while working.”

  • UPSC winner Pradeep Singh said in his message to UPSC candidates:

    If I can pass the civil service exam, anyone can. Anyone can succeed. One just needs to be focused and determined. ”
