wiki/biography/career
Prakashi Tomar was born on January 1, 1937 in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh (age 82 in 2019). Tomar was born into a farming family. After getting married, Prakashi moved to Jori village in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh. She began her shooting career when she was 60 years old. This all happened when she shot her first target. It all started when her daughter Seema joined the Johri Rifle Club to learn shooting and Prakashi sent her to the academy. Her first shot came when she was teaching her daughter Seema how to handle a gun. This shocked everyone, including the coach, who suggested Prakashi join the shooting range. But since Tomar is a housewife and has to complete many household chores, it is not possible for her to go to the shooting range every day. So the coach gave her the option of going to the shooting range once a week and continuing her practice at home. After two years of extensive training, Prakashi participated in a competition against Delhi Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Dheeraj Singh and defeated him. The Ministry of Home Affairs refused to take a photo with Tomar, reportedly saying, “What photo, I was humiliated by a woman.” Prakashi has won around 25 titles across the country. She even won a gold medal at the Veterans Shooting Championship in Chennai. She founded many sporting events and driving ranges in her village and nearby areas.
Prakash also coaches young people from nearby villages in shooting techniques at her shooting range.
In 2019, Tushar Hiranandani directed Saand Ki Aankh, a film based on the biography of Tomar and her sister-in-law Chandro Tomar. The film stars Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar.
