Prasanth Nair is an Indian IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer and film director. He is known for his experimental initiatives in poverty eradication and urban management such as ‘Compassionate Kozhikode’, ‘Operation Soleimani’ and ‘Sawarigiri’ in Kozhikode.

Prasanth Nair was born in Thalassery in Kannur district of Kerala and works as the private secretary to Minister of State for Tourism KJ Alphons (33 years old; as of 2019). He spent his childhood in Thiruvananthapuram. He attended Loyola School in Thiruvananthapuram. Nair graduated in law from Government Law College, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. As a child, he wanted to be a cinematographer, but after graduating, he began preparing for the civil service. In 2006, he secured #AIR 4 in UPSC examination and transferred to Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from Kerala cadre.

Prasanth Nair belongs to the Hindu Kshatriya family. His mother is a professor at a government medical college. He is married to Lakshmi Nair and has a son, Amrithavarshan, and a daughter, Ammu.
Profession
After passing the civil services examination, Prashant became an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) cadre officer in Kerala in 2006. He was appointed as the Collector of Kozhikode, Kerala state. Nair has served in various capacities in different sectors including taxation, tourism, water supply, roads and skills development. He led two World Bank projects namely ‘KSTP’ and ‘Jalandhini’. He won public praise after taking novel measures to eradicate poverty in Kozhikode. He launched several projects during his tenure such as Tere Mere Beach Mein, which dealt with waste management on Kozhikode beaches; Operation Suleimani, a project aimed at addressing hunger in urban areas; Yo Appooppa is a program designed to improve the quality of life of older men and women. Nair also launched the ‘Compassionate Kozhikode’ social initiative to help institutions such as children’s homes, nursing homes, mental health centers and palliative care centres. This quickly earned him the nickname “Brother Collectors.”
In November 2017, Nair was appointed as the private secretary to Minister of State for Tourism (Independent Charge) KJ Alphons for a term of five years. However, his appointment did not last even a year due to differences with the minister. He also served as secretary to then Home Minister Ramesh Chennaithala.
Apart from working as a civil servant, Prashant is also an actor in Ajay Devaloka’s Who. He also directed a short film titled “Daivakanam” which had its world premiere at the 71st Cannes Film Festival.

Prasanth Nair was embroiled in controversy when the Congress district president said that Nair was spending time on social media but did not receive calls. Later, Nair said in an interview: “It only takes five minutes to post on Facebook. Just because my profile picture is smiling at you 24×7, doesn’t mean I’m sitting there the whole time. Secondly, I don’t talk to my girlfriend. Citizens communicate with me through this medium to solve their problems. Finally, Facebook and Twitter are additional media to the citizen interface.”

- When Nair was appointed Collector of Kochikode, he came to know that the menu of Kutiravattom Mental Health Center in Calicut had remained unchanged since 1971. Therefore, he asked the hotel and restaurant associations and merchants to come forward and manage puttu to serve them on the first day.
