Pratibha Verma is an Indian civil servant who topped the list of female candidates in the 2019 UPSC examination.

Pratibha Verma was born in 1993 (27 years old in 2020) in Manpur village, Sarpatha Thana, Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. She grew up in Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh and attended school there. She attended schooling at Raj Sarswati Bal Vidya Mandir (RSBVM), Sultanpur and completed her high school education in 2008. She completed her intermediate education from Kamla Nehru Institute of Child Education (KNICE), Sultanpur in 2010. Later, she joined Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (2010-2014) and obtained a Bachelor of Engineering Physics with a score of 8.2/10. From May to July 2013, Pratibha Verma did a summer internship at Satyendra Nath Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata, where her project was Nanotechnology: Design of EMI Shielding using Carbon Nanotubes. After graduating from IIT Delhi, Pratibha worked in the private sector for two years before starting preparation for the civil services exam in 2016.
Family and caste
Pratibha Verma was born into a middle-class Other Backward Class (OBC) family. Her father, Sudhansh Verma, is a teacher at Baba Bhagwandas College, Bhadaiyan, Sultanpur. Her mother, Usha Verma, is also a government teacher in Sultanpur. She has an elder brother, Sudhir Verma, who is an engineer in Bangalore. Pratibha’s elder sister, Priyanka Verma, is pursuing her MD at Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi. She has a younger brother, Abhishek Verma, who is pursuing a B.Tech.

After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics from IIT Delhi, Pratibha Verma joined Vodafone India, Kolkata as a Graduate Trainee, where she worked for a year (July 2014 to June 2015) across Business and Technology verticals; as a Network Planner for the Kolkata region and Capacity Planner for the IT team. Later, she was promoted to Assistant Manager and posted to Vodafone India, Pune, where she worked for ten months (June 2015 to March 2016) as a Business Analyst, working closely with requirement owners, technical teams and business users; gathering functional requirements for product design, development and delivery. Before starting her Civil Services preparation, Pratibha worked as an Associate Manager at Vodafone India, Pune for five months (March 2016 to July 2016), responsible for Vodafone Prepaid products.
Government departments
Pratibha Verma passed the UPSC exam with 489 marks in Physics in 2018. She prepared for the optional subject (Physics) at Delhi Institute of Administrative Services (DIAS).
She worked as a trainee in the Indian Forest Service (IFS), Government of India for five months (from August 2019 to December 2019). In December 2019, she joined the Income Tax Department, Indian Revenue Service (IRS) as a trainee and worked there till 2019 when she again passed the UPSC exam with AIR 3 and became an IAS officer.
